Digital Storytelling

Good morning, today we are going to start working on a project that will end with the final product being a 'digital storytelling'. Our story will be told in first person and will revolve around 'What Freedom Means to Me'. After all of your research in putting together the Google docs presentation you should have a great deal of information to get you started on the project.

Here is the basic format: (courtesy University of Houston, College of Education)
PART ONE: Define, Collect, Decide

1. Select a topic for your digital story.
2. Create a folder on the desktop where you can store the materials you find.
3. Search for image resources for your story, including: pictures, drawings, photographs, maps, charts, etc. - Save these resources in your folder.
4. Try to locate audio resources such as music, speeches, interviews, and sound effects. - Save these resources in your folder.
5. Try to find informational content, which might come from web sites, word processed documents, or PowerPoint slides. - Save these resources in your folder.
6. Begin thinking of the purpose of your story. Are you trying to inform, convince, provoke, question?

PART TWO: Select, Import, Create

1. Select the images you would like to use for your digital story.
2. Select the audio you would like to use for your digital story.
3. Select the content and text you would like to use for your digital story.
4. Import images into digital storytelling tool (we will discuss this tomorrow).
5. Import audio into digital storytelling tool.
6. Modify number of images and/or image order, if necessary.

PART THREE: Decide, Write, Record, Finalize

1. Decide on the purpose and point of view of your digital story.
2. Write a script that will be used as narration in your digital story AND provides the purpose and point of view you have chosen.
3. Use a computer microphone and record the narration of your script.
4. Import the narration into digital storytelling tool.
5. Finalize your digital story by saving it as a Windows Media Video (.wmv) file or MP3/4 file.

Project Guidelines:

• Your digital story (DS) must be 3 to 4 minutes in length.
• All DS resources, images, documents, audio, etc. must be in the Digital Storytelling folder on your P drive.
• Your DS must include at least one hand drawn image (you can use MSPaint, Adobe Illustrator, etc).
• Your DS must be professional, factual and something you can be proud to show other people.
• We will discuss what tools we will use to produce our DS.
• Your DS must be in a format that will allow you to share with the world (.flv, .mp3, .mp4, .wmv, etc).
• You must develop a storyboard that includes a script before you begin assembling your DS and these items must be approved by me.
• Any audio, video, digital images used in your DS must comply with copyright law. (We will discuss this tomorrow.)
• All audio, video, digital images must be renamed, if necessary, so that the media has a meaningful name. (We will talk about this too.)
• You will receive multiple grades as we progress through this project.
• ALL deadlines must be met. (We will discuss deadlines and final project presentation tomorrow.)
• DS must include audio piece spoken by you.
• DS must include at least one photo of you.
• DS must include list of credits, resources, etc. at the end.

Pearl Harbor Comments and Reflection

What is your impression of the Pearl Harbor research you conducted as part of your project?

What was the most moving and significant aspect of the attack for you? And why?

Could the technology tools that we have today, prevented, or at least made the results of the attack less severe? How? and what tools?
